460 install help

Well I thought I had my install of my 460 done over the weekend and now I have a problem that I can not figure out. I am new to this forum and am hoping you guys can help me out. I used a 390 flywheel with 11 inch diaphragm clutch and bolted it to the 4 speed transmission. I bolted the starter back on because I wanted to make sure the motor turned over before I installed all the accessories. However the starter will not enage the flywheel and I can tell I am getting power to it because it clicks and I can see it flexing when it is trying to mesh. I can't hear it spin but I know it is good because I took it and had it tested at autozone. It is 351m starter. I have read some threads about some people having to use a 3/8 spacer between the bell housing and transmission? Any ideas or input would be greatly appreciated. Really hoping I don't have to pull this motor again . Thanks guys

You need to use a starter from a 390 do to the change in tooth count.

I have read in other forums about people just using there original 351m starter? I will try getting another starter specifically for a 390 tooth count flywheel

I have read that article before I did the install and the only thing I can think to try is one of those gear reduction starters because maybe the stock starter doesn't have enough torque to turn the motor over?

I would imagine it is for a manual as it worked with the original motor and the transmission hasn't changed. However I was reading some forums on that and the auto extends 3/8" deeper in the bell housing so I will have to look at it more in depth when I pull it back off this weekend.

I pulled the motor today and could not turn the motor over manually with the flywheel on it. Unbolted the clutch and flywheel and can turn it over? I'm stumped. Only thing I can figure is the bolts are to long using a 390 flywheel? Possibly threading through the flange and into the back of the block?

Ended up being the flywheel bolts were about a 1/16" to long and hitting into the back of the block. Put a washer between all the bolts and problem solved. Weird the things you run into. Thanks to all who responded to this thread. Now to put the accessories on

Yeah, you do not want to leave washers on there. That will cause the bolts to walk out for sure. I would source the correct bolts before putting the engine back in.

Also new on here and have reach my limits on a 460 swap im making on a 79.

I am attempting to put a 1972 Linclon 460 in. It had a front sump oil pan on it and I'm trying swap it to a rear sump. I was given a pan and best I can tell by the numbers its off a 94 F250 460. From my research the oil pump is the same but I have used two pickup tubes (84ds1)(84ds2) nether of these seam to be right and wont allow the pan to go on. I know they sell swap kits but the pans in them look the same as the one I have. HELP PLEASE
