That is the wrong thing to replace for the guage in the dash. The one you want to replace is on the passenger side block under the rear exhaust manifold between cyl # 5 and #6. Small fitting with one wire on it. Usually never goes bad, but.......
Had the same prob. To check the sensor, turn ignition key to run position, and take the wire from the temp sensor and groung it to the block, the look at the gauge in the dash. If the gauge goes all the way up, the sensors bad , if not then its the gauge, or the wiring if your real unlucky. I had a bad gauge, Ford dealer wants $145 for the gauge if you have a tach. Most junk yards will sell the entire cluster for 120 used. Or Probably the best way is to get an autometer gage and sensor for 80 dollars and a 40 made to fit f150 gauge pod.
