I need to find a way to collapse hydraulic lifters on a 390 engine with non adjustable rocker arms when they are pumped up .I need to check to see if I have the correct push rods. I just started the engine (newly rebuilt) have valve noise any ideas on this would be appreciated. Stock ford had three lengths stock .060 under and .060 over. Thinking about push rod checkers there adjustable may be able to collapse lifter? Jerry

You might also ask on the FE forum further down the page.
You need 3 Ford parts catalogs to find out what the 390 pushrod lengths are. Besides myself, how many other people that frequent the FE forum have any?
The tool you need is a Ford (T58P-6565-A), good luck finding one. All of the cam manufactures (Comp, Crane, etc.) have pushrods in any length you could possibly need. If the engine was rebuilt with a performance cam the base circle could be smaller than stock and cause the pushrods to be to short. But before you get to far into the pushrod thing remove the valve covers and run the engine and make certain that the pushrods are rotating if any of them are not rotating one or more of your cam lobes may have failed. Been there, done that, an it ain't no fun.
I suggested the FE engine forum due to the people on there who are rebuilding them. The OP could get some more useful info on other products and tips.
You are an amazing source of info. I was able to find an replacement axle retaining plate for my dana 44 because of you. Thank you.
