U Haul sez no hauling above 50 mph. Is there a problem ? The trailer fall apart or carry a tell tale ?

I run them up to 65. I try not to go faster because the tires are a ST tire.

Otherwise no issues at all.

WHY, ?

have you seen or look at HOW long some of there equipment SITS for months...

Trucks, seem OK,,, but trailers... check them over very closely before removing one from there lot.

I have no relations with U-Haul.. just an auto mechanic.(retired). and having to Help customers with rented U-Haul trailers..

check tires and wiring... and have extra fuses for you tow vehicle.. and already stated ST tires.. max speed is 65 for them.

It's simply an attempt at shifting the liability.

They have set the recommended speed low enough that people without towing experience can tow safely with a low exposure to risk for the company.

If you exceed that speed limit and something goes wrong, well, they tried to warn you.

Liability shift ... Nothing more, nothing less IMO.

Here's a little Uhaul trailer going 75 mph:

Need to say more?
Most people that rent a trailer for a one time use have absolutely NO clue what they are doing.

Not a Uhaul, but same kinda of scenario with a car trailer loaded incorrectly.

While dramatic, neither of those videos show anything other than improperly loaded trailers.

If loaded properly, they both would have been fine at whatever speed you want to go. I don't think there is anything about a uhaul that makes it inherently unstable above a given speed, it is just that uhaul knows the majority of their customers rarely load or pull trailers. If the vehicles in the videos above would have slowed down, the trailer sway would have been easily managed or tolerated. The sway would still be there because the trailer isn't loaded right, but the attitude of the trailer would be such that it wont likely get out of shape.

And the guys rims on the expedition had nothing to do with it. Thats just one guy not liking a certain style. He might as well have said "well there ya go, its white".

Bottom line, if that guy wrecked going 75, uhaul can say he was going beyond the trailers speed limit and are less likely to be held liable.

Bearings and tires are less likely to fail at 45mph, which greatly reduces their exposure if followed, and reduces their liability if exceeded.

Exactly, thus my comment:

It is typically not the trailers fault, just the person using it. Keeping it at a slower speed will keep it more stable if loaded wrong. Thus eliminating problems and liability.

Not to mention slamming on the brakes is the last thing you want to do if a trailer is swaying.
