351 valve noise

Recently I have put a gasket kit in a 351w. The engine was taken apart without identifying each pushrod for its particular valve. The job is complete, the engine has run 250 miles with no problems, but there is alot of noise from the valves. Could the pushrods be the problem because they were mismatched? They showed no wear problems. Would new pushrods cure the noise? Iam assuming that the lifters would be primed by now. Thank you.

sounds like they are not set correctly. The easiest way is to set them with the motor idling. Tighten them till they just quite down then a full turn of the nut after that.

There is no adjustment, however, I would still recommend torquing the rockers on the base circle of the cam.

it is true there is no ajustment once the lifter preload has been set. The correct way is to do it on the base circle of the cam when the heads are assembled. You need a shaft so you can prime the lifters with a drill. Otherwise you can set them with the motor idling. The one turn of the nut method sets the lifter preload after all slack is taken up. Both ways work equally well.

In the manuals I used the only information I found was a torque value of 18 to24 lbs. to secure the rockers. This is a salvaged 88 engine by the way, with a 78 intake, a 75 carb, and a rebuilt points type distributor, so there may be some other ills at hand to sort out. If I understand correctly, I should now remove the covers and possibly retorque the rockers during idle? Another question, could a timing error also cause any valve noise? At present, advance is set at 14 degrees before, idling 650 rpms, temperature maintaining 160 to 180 degrees. Thank you for your help and please continue to tender your advice as all words of wisdom are educational to me. I will be away a few days so I look forward to checking back here in a few days.
