Even if you scrape away the rust and look really close? Mine were basically unreadable, too, but I could read them when the engine was off and I was real close. I marked 10° BTDC with chalk and then it was easy to time.

If you cannot find the top dead center on your harmonic balancer you can turn the engine over by hand to find TDC on the #1 cylinder and then scribe a mark on the balancer coresponding to the pointer. After this is done you can go to a automotive/ speed shop and purchase an adhesive timing strip to replace the original timing marks. Just line the TDC mark on the balncer with the one on the strip and bob's your uncle.
