I have an 83 E100 with a 300. I put in an aftermarket A/C over the weekend. I have 2 questions. First, the shop manual says the factory install requires 3.5lbs of coolant. I figured with 134 I could safely put in 3 lbs including an oil charge. The temp outside was about 75. I barely got 2 12oz cans and 1 8oz oil charge in when the low side was reading 50 and the high side was over 350 at 1500rpm. Is this normal? The air coming out was about 60deg and the site glass showed foam throughout the charge. Before charging, I vacuumed the system for over 20min and let it sit for another 30 and no leaks. The other problem is clutch slippage. Sometimes, not always, the clutch will slip on acceleration or just revving up quickly. The voltage is fine at the compressor. I watched the gauges as I hit the throttle and noticed that it slips when the pressure goes over 350. Before I put the system together I made sure I had clean hoses and fittings so I'm pretty confident that there's no foreign matter plugging up anything. Any ideas would be helpful.
An aftermarket AC? You mean the whole AC system kit, or just aftermarket replacement parts? The high pressure is going too high appearantly, possibly due to overcharge, or possibly because the Engine cooling fan clutch isnt drawing air over the condenser adequately. The compressor is locking up I think, not slipping. How much oil did you put in the compressor before you started charging?
It's a full kit. I put 1 8oz charge of oil in it. Could that be too much? You maybe right about the locking up. I watched the clutch while gunning the engine and sometimes it would make a terrible noise and the clutch would stop moving. The belt kept ongoing though. I thought it was just slipping but it could be locking up. All I put in was 2 12oz cans of 134 and 1 8oz can of oil. Doesn't seem like much considering how much the factory install requires. Thanks for the help.
I usually dont put more than 8 oz in the whole system. It may possibly be oil clogged. Might have to get the compressor warrantied if it continues locking up. May have a bad reed valve
