Question What is this?

Can anyone tell me what the blue round bowl looking thing is?
It's located on the bottom/front/passenger side; almost under the alternator, (directly under the horn) next to the bottom left corner of the radiator?
It's connected to the frame, not the engine. I only have 1 hose connected to it, (that goes to the back), but it looks like it should have [2] hoses since there's an empty connection.

I have a 71 f100, 300-6.

What is this?

It's definetly a charcoal filter with only one hose attached. The other openings are for the purified air to escape.

Oh.... so is that supposed to be changed or replaced regularly?
How about water getting in?
Would that damage it?

It shouldn't get much water in but in any case it won't damage it. The charcoal canister is used to capture the gasoline vapors from the top of the gas tank. There was a 1" flexible hose that connected to it and to the side of the air cleaner which draws the vapors that are trapped in the charcoal into the engine and burned.

i've seen in my scheduled maintenance for my 72 f100 that the eec canister and purge hose should be changed at 24,000 miles. Is it talking about the "charcoal canister"?
