During the grafting of a late model dana 60 into the highboy frame, I have come across an issue. I need a steering box that will fit in front of the front cross member. There is no room behind it as my motor mount take up all that space. I don't have the $$ for a redhead unit so I am stuck trying to find one that will mount to the inside of the frame with the pitman arm to the rear. I know I will have to box the frame. Through searching I saw where one guy took a big notch out of the cross member to make a 2wd box work, don't really want to go that route. The question, what makes and models have a box that will work with crossover steering and the pitman arm faces back?
Convert a half-ton 4x4 76/79 steering box with the worm gear of a 2WD bullnose and you'll have a steering box with its pitman arm pointing arrears. Mounts outside the frame though.
I have researched a little on the 4x4x2 boxes. Outside the frame is part of the problem. The pitman arm would be directly above the spring.
I have found that a mid 90s chev box is an aft output. The pitman arm off a mid 90s 350 ford fits the splines but does not fit them quite as tight though, just pushing with hand pressure there is no slop. I will order a drop pitman for a ford and install to the chev box that I have halfway installed. Another thing, they are a dime-a-dozen in the junk yards. This is strictly an off-road rig so if there is a problem it's just me and the mud.
