A little over a year ago, I did a few mods/ updates to by truck. I had an injector cup fail and decided to make the mods while I had it down. New injector cups, Baby Swamp Injectors, 6637 intake (Riffraff), Diamond Eye 4" exhaust with 3" down pipe, TS 6 position chip. I have Boost gauge and EGT gauge as well as Edge Monitor. Initially I was really happy with the truck as my daily driver. However, since I do use it pulling heavy loads rather frequently, I am having concerns.
I have a "Tow" setting on my chip. When in this setting, or any other, pulling a heavy load, I can't get over 45mph due to EGT's. At 45 mph, I'm running about 1100 degrees. Way too high in my opinion. I know an intercooler would help with EGT's, but will it help enough to justify the bigger injectors?
Right now I'm really contemplating going back with stock injectors.
Looking for advise or direction.
Thanks in advance.
Also, I'm assuming you didn't get custom tuning on that chip... which means that stock isn't really stock, and a custom tune will help with EGTs (in most cases) and the tuner can load a true stock tune to the chip. With baby swamp injectors on a true stock tune you shouldn't have EGT issues unless something else is going on.
1100 on the pyro is nothing, an intercooler would sure help a lot, and as Phil said, if it ain't got custom tune for those injectors your going to run hotter than stock.
I purchased the chip through the same company, at the same time, that I ordered my injectors. Guess I'll start looking into the intercooler. See how it goes after that. Thanks for the input.
I would verify that you have the right tunes for your truck. Just because you ordered a chip doesn't mean you received one setup for your truck. who did you buy it from?
Intercoolers help big time. I noticed a 300+ degree change in EGT temps under load with mine installed. I also have custom tuning that was done before the intercooler installed. Which did make a difference but with big injectors and a heavy load the temps will still shoot up without an intercooler. 1100 degrees will be fine but sustaining temps 1250 or above will spell disaster. Naturally cooler is better when it comes to those EGTs so I would check your tuning and see if an intercooler is in your budget.
I emailed them yesterday, here's the response
"but based on your programming recommendations from your original invoice...the only tune that might have signficantly more fuel than a stock tune, would be the #6."
My settings are
1. High Idle
2. Stock
3. Standard
4. Economy/ Highway
5. Tow
6. Hot
I will email them back to see if I can get the info for each setting.
I'd suggest turning the chip down until you add an intercooler or troubleshoot any boost and/or (pre turbo) exhaust leaks.
As said, for twelve years now I've run 1200° all day long and the trucks still run good. I have never found a 300° drop from a IC, maybe 100°-150°. If you want a total of 300° drop in temps then the combination of a IC and water injection will do it.
