Losing Coolant - 04 6.0 Excursion

Did an oil change and noticed the coolant was a bit low. Truck has been acting normal so checked everything over and found one spot that seems to be leaking, and the EGR cooler I'm not sure about.

Pictures are below. Leak is coming from the top of what appears to be a control valve.

EGR looked dry inside, then I scraped it and it acts like a booger. Sticks real good. So i think I may need a new egr cooler.

Oil / Coolant Temps are normally 3-5 deg F different, but it seems as though I've may have lost the EGR cooler anyway.

Looks like you are leaking at the heater valve? That's the plastic valve in the 3rd pic. Likely hoses. You might try replacing the spring clamps with worm clamps. Spring clamps do sometimes get weak with age.

I would also check the hoses below the degas bottle. There is one that's hard to follow down to the water pump. Those are notorious for leaking at the bottom. Come up from the bottom of the engine you should be able to see white residue if it's been leaking.

Also check for cracks in the Degas.

The intake can get pretty gooey as you get oil from the crankcrase breather back into the intake. Mine is typically pretty nasty below the EGR valve.

Easiest way to check for a blown EGR cooler is park with nose downhill overnight. Pull EGR valve and see if it's wet.

Your deltas are really good so you are probably fine. EGR coolers blow when you start restricting flow with a plugged oil cooler and they start boiling coolant.

I would suggest switching to ELC coolant (red) at your next service. No silicates to plug the oil cooler.

BTW there is a 6.0 specific forum. It's a ways down the list, but a LOT of great 6.0 guys over there.

That's why I checked EGR, I park downhill when it's parked at the house.

I figured the deltas have always been fine and a lack of white smoke so I just wanted to make sure it's good by checking. The gooeyness of the junk in the intake worried me.

Also the ring around the degas... what's the deal there? Thought that only happened under pressure.
Mods, can you move to 6.0 forum?

Replace the degas cap with a new one. Over time they can weaken and not hold back the correct 16psi pressure. The white crud right around the cap seems more like the cap is leaking, and not that coolant is being forced to vent under pressure like you'd see with a failed EGR cooler. When there's a lot of pressure in the cooling system, the "puking" isn't hyperbole, it literally pukes coolant out off degas bottle and over most of the top part of the engine.

wow, i seem to be having the same issue lately. coolant temps running between 194-204, oil temps running 195-212 (heat of the day around 100 degrees).

had to put around 3 gallons of coolant in system over last 3 weeks. notice when i get somewhere after driving, there is coolant on the drivers side shock and wheel well area.

im hoping it is just a bad hose, clamp, or crack in the bottle and not an issue with the oil cooler.
