460 4bbl stalling solved
My 1988 Georgie Boy motor home on a John Deere chassis with Ford running gear and a 460cid 4bbl engine was stalling.
The first time it happened I was about 100 miles into a 400 mile trip. It just lost power for a few moments, backfired and then ran fine for another 150 miles.
I found two mechanics with Ford truck experience that would look at it but neither had a clue, except one did measure 3psi inch of fuel at the carburtor.
The stalling happened more often until I was down to every mile it would lose power.
I filled the tank and the stalling went away.
So when I returned from the trip I replaced the in-tank fuel pump. (this after fuel filters, spark plug wires, distributor cap, etc).
40 miles later it stalled again so I took it to the most respected Ford truck dealer in Arizona.
$350 and 10 miles later it stalled again.
At this point I observed that what I thought was a fuel cut-off switch in the fuel line just ahead of the carburetor was actually a pressure regulator. I adjusted the pressure up to 5psi (Haynes said it should be 7psi) and it has not stalled since.
Don't know if the pressure regulator is a Ford, John Deere or Georgie Boy part but the fix was simple.
I just wish that any one of the 4 mechanics that had worked on it had solved the problem.
