My new barn find does not have a fan attached to the engine. Owner was going to install an electric fan. I can't find a good pic of how original was mounted on engine due to cross over manifold. Can someone with an original Y V8 send me some close ups of the bracket?
Not sure which truck you have, but on my 1955 F350 the fan was mounted on the "high mount" water pump. Always try to put as much info about your truck when you post. It helps to narrow down the questions. Also post pictures. guys on FTE love pictures. Good luck with your project and welcome aboard.
If you go the electric fan route, which has some advantages, be careful if you have an replacement aluminum radiator as the fan mounts with ties through the radiator. The problem is the aluminum vs the original brass is soft and the fins get distorted after only a few miles.
I took a piece of polished aluminum diamond plate and built a flat shroud that mounts to the steel radiator frame and then mounted the fan to that. It works good.
I can also recommend the silicone hoses (mine are blue but you can get other colors) and Gates Power Grip Clamps that you shrink on with a heat gun. They were designed for truckers to eliminate the leaks that they were getting with screw-type clamps in cold weather.
Where are you located? I have an original high mount fan if you are interested? I would suggest going with a Ford Thunderbird fan, Volvo relay and BMW temp switch.
Hey Jules,
That's the exact set up we are using... seems to be common
on Ebay. You'll get very familiar with your fan shroud ....
lot's of adjusting/trimming to get that 5 inch deep Thunderbird fan
into our F1 but it can be done.
