I believe it's the way the center section is welded to the rim. Gennies look like the original Ford wheel that was on Fords and Mercs in the later 40's. The center is attached to the rim at four locations, probably using rivets, or weld. This results in 4 spaces around the center and rim. A smoothie generally has the center fully welded to the rim, no spaces between rim and center. A gennie almost always will accept a stock late 40's Ford hubcap, while a smoothie may have to be ordered to accept one.
