I just picked up an OEM rim that I will use for a spare(so I wont have to drive around on the ugly black rim if I get a flat). Stupid question....Should I put the rim under my Expy with the good side facing up? Does it matter? Will that keep it from getting real dirty? Thanks
My guess is that it will get plenty dirty either way, but if you put the good side up it should be protected from gravel, etc. that could get "slung up" into it.
Depends on how you look at it. If the "good" side is facing outward (down) you'll be able to crawl under and clean periodically and check tire pressure. If the "good" side is facing upward it might stay a little cleaner initially, but it will get some funny rub marks and depressions from where it meets the undercarriage. When my tire shop reinstalled, they put the "good" side up then last weekend I let the spare down to clean and check pressure. When I reinstalled I put the "good" side out for the reasons above.
Has anyone here had the spare tire cable mechanism lock up?
I took my wife's 2000 EB 4x4 to the local tire shop to have a couple of tires switched, and when they dropped the spare down, the cable appears to have gotten caught up in the crank gears, inside the gear box mechanism. They put the spare in the back of the truck, and said I needed a new box.
It's riveted together, but I'm thinking of just buying one from a yard, instead of drilling the rivets out and trying to get mine working again.

Anyone seen this?
Happens all the time. A new unit can be had from the dealer for about $50 if I'm not mistaken. Putting a new one in takes 5 minutes - 4 bolts. Happened to my brother's Expy - we had to fenagle it down a few inches, then get one of our techs (I work at a tire store) who had small arms to reach in through the hole behind the license plate (took the plate off ) and cut the cable. A real PITA.
We see it alot with these trucks - enough that I warn customers ahead of time that it may happen, so they can't hit us with the "it was fine when it came in here" routine.
After I replaced the steel OEM spare with an alloy to match the other wheels, I put the good side down. After 90K miles, I can't tell the difference in mud, sand, gravel etc. that collects on the good side vs inside. Two advantages to having the good side down and exposed: easier to check air pressure once per week ( no need to lift hood get handle, etc) and it's easier to clean any accumulation of dirt. I have found no gravel dings or other damage at all, and I travel on dirt and gravel frequently.
