i have an1986 f-150 4x4 w/ a 4 sp granny low......it has a 300 in it and 160,000 miles on it ..it doesnt smoke ..runs good....but it doesnt get great gas mileage but the main thing is it aint fast.....a lot of pulling power but no speed.....i aim considering a v8 swap...would that be best with my gearing....or is it possible to build a 300 to smoke the tires and be fast..thanks
the question really would be what kind of money do you want to spend to gain this? If your looking to build a high HP motor fairly cheap swap to the V8 Since aftermarket Power pasrts are much cheaper and easier to find. The 300 has been known to build enough power to make big blocks seem like a 4banger, plus lots of low end T.Q. down low to burn the rubber off any tire ya can place on the truck, But Building one to do so don't come cheap and can be tricky to do. It's like the saying goes it takes lots of $$ to gain the power your looking for. But you should be able to build a mild 302 or a 351W fairly cheap to do what your looking for.
I just finished doing a 6 to 8 swap, it wasn't too hard, best thing to do is buy a parts truck from your local auto trader for about 500, then go at it, there really isn't anything too it
