I wouldnt mind paying 800 for that kit since it'd give me cooler air but I can't afford something like that because I'm gonna be sending my truck off before to long to get it painted. If it wasn't for that I'd go ahead and buy the kit to get the air running

It comes with everything except the evaporator. Ford OEM Factory Air Conditioning Parts & Restoration Services
the '73 - '79 kit isnt on their website but they have one and it fits perfectly.

Bummer. I'm in central texas, about 30 miles outside of the DFW mess. I think you are a bit out of range.

What sort of condition is the current a/c system in?
Are all the parts still there and is the compressor free?

I did just discover this bad spot on a small line going from the coil to the condenser

The compressor turns when I turn the control switch on and other then that one bad spot in that small line everything looks intact and from what I can tell nothing is missing

I had the same kink in my liquid line, you'll need to replace that (Fellow FTEr may have one for sale or you can get a replacement made at an A/C shop). Other than that you might be able to get away with a flush of the whole system and a charge.

Since a common everyday Joe can't buy r12 anymore without a license could I get by if I bought one of those adapters for r12 to r134 from a parts store? With after I flush the system of course.

HoustonDave says:

"you can try purging the system by pumping a lot of alcohol through it, blowing it as dry as possible, then filling it"

Is there a process for this? I am having an A/C guy come to my house for some ac repair, I am hoping he can remove the r-12, then purge the system for me as I am taking the ac from a parts truck into my restoration project.

I think as long as the system has been closed (not unhooked where the elements have gotten in there - a flush, recharge with R134 (and PAG Oil) should give you conditioned air. There might be some o-rings you'll need to replace either because they are old or don't work well with R134 (read:leaks). Most folks will tell you that R134 in an R12 system doesn't produce as cold air as the old R12 did (expectations) but it'll be better than hot!

You might search in FTE/google/youtube for purging methods to see how it's done. I think its pretty straightforward if you have/borrow the right gear.
