Custom headliner for bronco canopy?

I have the interior out and top off my 1996 bronco right now and I would really like to put a headliner in the canopy. The reasons are two fold, I wouldn’t mind cutting down some noise and drips.

I wanted to see if any others had done this and if so what they had done, pitfalls, things they would do differently, things that worked well, etc. There aren’t many places for hold downs and I would like to avoid drilling into the top if possible.

Thanks!

I am wanting to do the exact same thing for my '86. I was thinking of making the headliner backboard (don't know if that's the exact term) with fiberglass with the top out of the vehicle and upside down.

After that, get new headliner material for both the front and canopy so that it matches and glue it to the new backboard.

I was thinking 3M auto double-sided auto tape to stick it to the top. As far as the finishing details, I was thinking of putting just a ribbon or thicker piece of material around the headliner to give it that finished look. I was also thinking about going all the way down the sides as well (around the windows).

Again, this is only a planning stage and item 29 of things I want to do to the Bronco so it will be some time before I get time and money to start this project. I'll be interested to see what other people have done.

You mean a headliner in the removable top, or do you have an aftermarket soft top canopy?

If you want to put a headliner in the stock top, you might get lucky enough to find one in a junk yard. I think most xlt and Eddie Bauer broncos came stock with a headliner back there. I know I found a headliner from an xlt at a yard, but I had to take off the old material and put on the new stuff (so it was the correct color). The backing board was in great shape though!

Edit: On my 96, I believe the places that hold it down are the seatbelt mounts, the front trim panel between the cab and top, and there should be two hanger clips as well. So you shouldn't have to do any drilling or modification to put in a stock headliner for your Bronco. Mine didn't come with one from factory but a factory one just plopped right in.

I had some similar thinking, but I was just thinking of doing the celling. A backboard of some kind with fabric around it for the general concept, but also putting in a few acoustic tiles on the celling to reduce panel resonance, a layer of foam to absorb ambient noise, then fabric to close it all out.
One idea I had for a backboard was taking a thin sheet of ABS and heat forming it too the top with a heat gun.
The problem I am trying to sort out is two fold:
-Can I build it light enough to stay up without putting a bunch of screws in it (hopefully just using spray adhesive, double stick tape, weather stripping sealant, etc.)? To add to this, this truck sees some really terrible roads when I go fishing, hunting, and camping.
-Make it not look like junk. If it doesn’t have a good transition to the fiberglass part of the top or it’s going to look terrible.

The factory removable hardtop.

Interesting, I need to dig up some info on these OEM headliners. Do you have any pictures of this OEM headliner and the mounting points (other than the seatbelt and clothes hangers)?

Taking a look at the OEM setup would be really helpful!

thanks!

This is on a 1993 XLT. It is held in by the top trim piece above the front seats, the rear pillar trim, seatbelt anchors, clothes hangers, two push type pins and the rear cargo light. There is no trim piece at the rear above the tailgate glass, the edge is exposed there.

Hope this helps. Mine really needs to be recovered.

Those are some great pictures! Thank you, that should do what I need, now I need to try and find one!

Thanks again!
