Exclamation 5.0 swap into 4x4 3.0 manual

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and really need advice and experience.
I have a completely stock and very clean 98 Ranger with the 3.0, and 5 speed manual 4x4 transmission.

I want to put a 5.0 from a mustang in my truck. I know I will have to replace the wiring harness and ECU to make the engine run, I believe I will need to replace the stock clutch with a performance clutch to handle the power increase.

I read that a 96 Ford Explorer 5.0 will be kind of a plug and play swap. however, in the thread it explained to install the transmission as well, which is automatic. I want to keep my Ranger manual, preferably a 6 speed.

So, I want a 6 speed manual 4x4 ranger, with a 5.0.

What will I have to do to make this work? Can I keep the 5 speed tranny to keep the 4x4? so far all 6 speeds are RWD.

Please help, I will do my best to answer any questions.

Thanks guys!

A 3.0L transmission will not bolt up to a 5.0L engine. The bolt pattern is completely different. You will need to swap to a 5.0L transmission and transfer case. There were a few 4x4's offered over the years in Bronco's and F150's, but not that many. Some might have had a creeper first gear, I just can't remember. None were 6 speeds except some newer 4x2 cars.

Thanks for the reply. So basically I need to find a manual 4x4 transmission out of a f150? Will I need to make new brackets for it to fit my ranger? Thanks

You are going to need engine mount brackets ( I have seen these available as aftermarket mods) also a new transmission crossmember, but you may be able to move yours rearward and make it work. New front and rear driveshafts, new exhaust, radiator, fan should, etc. There may be a clearance problem between the F150 transfer case and your fuel tank. If your 5.0L has a carb, you will need to change to a different fuel delivery system with a low pressure pump. And several other modifications.

The later F-150's with the 4.2 transmission and transfer case is what to look for, puts shifter in almost stock location. Allows use of F-150 clutch components. Stock Explorer 5.0 motor mounts fit and work just fine in your truck. Fuel systems are different, Ranger return-less while Explorer had return line. Fuel pressure different also. Lots of smaller differences also.
