2wd low range?

I'e been trying to search this out off and on for weeks, but the results I get are either for super duty trucks or much older trucks that may not use the same systems.

I have a 2010 Ranger sport 4x4 that I use to tow a popup camper. IT does the job well and still gets about 16mpg towing! My problem is the ridiculously tall reverse gear in this thing that is making my clutch very sad. When backing my camper into my driveway I have to slip the clutch pretty bad.

I would like to be able to disconnect the front axle actuator somehow, and use the low range in 2wd for backing up into my driveway. Anyone done this? Can anyone point me to someone that has?

Do you have the vacuum hubs? I know on my bigger trucks i just leave the hubs unlocked when doing this

2010 Ranger doesnt have hubs, it uses an axle interlock on the front end, but I'll be honest, I havent even been under the truck to see if its electric, vacuum, or hydraulic.

I've got a ton of projects, so I try to research out as best I can before heading to the garage to get dirty.

Even if you have to make a turn on pavement you can still use 4 low.

For what you'd like to do, you're SOL. You would need manual locking hubs, and as you've noted, your front differential is engaged at all times.

As glockholiday suggested, just go ahead and use low range. Just try to keep the turning to a minimum, as it puts extra stress on the drivetrain while it tries to rotate tires that won't slip (when on pavement).

Oh they'll slip, and you'll here it but you're not going to break anything. It can take way more stress than turning up your driveway in 4 low.

Wrong. There is no axle interlock. All Rangers from mid-year 2000 and newer don't have any un-lockable hubs or axle interlock. The front differential is engaged with the front wheels at all times, even in 2wd.

The only way to have "2-low" is to convert the front axle and hubs to the 1998-2000 setup, which uses the same exact suspension setup as the 2000.5+, but has locking hubs that can be un-locked. I once saw a thread where someone did exactly that, and wrote-up a how-to with a parts list. I'm not sure if it was this site or a different site though.

Thank you for your time. I knew someone would have the right info for me. I'll just deal with it and when the time comes, the M5OD is light enough for an afternoon clutch swap.
