Cool 1978 F-100 Custom

Hey I'm new to the Forum. I just put my second starter in 4 years into my 78 F100. When I got the first one it lookEd like the one that I pulled out and turned in for the core charge in 2013. Bought another one Saturday, it looks identical to the one that I just pulled out. My father and rebuilt the truck and I'm wondering if he swapped Transmissions. When I reach inside the bell housing I can feel where there was like a nipple cast into the housing itself. When I insert this starter the nipple on the end and the nipple in the house in touch and I can't get it flush to the cover plate. Does anyone have any idea what Transmissions would fit the 78 inline 6 with a starter that's very very very similar. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Might help to know what transmission you have?

The manual and auto starters had different nose cones. One was deeper.

Hope that helps???

He had painted everything. I am trying to find out what it is. As for the auto vs. manual it is a manual with out the sylinoid attached.

i had this exact problem last week. i have 77 f100 custom, inline 6, 3 on the tree.

where did you get the starter from? i replaced my starter last week, picked one up at advanced auto, went home, and then proceeded to crack the casing on the starter b/c it didn't fit flush. i was thinking it would line up if i slowly tightened the bolts a turn at a time, then 'SNAP'.

took it back to advanced and luckily he exchanged it for a new one at no charge. went back home, and finally figured out it was not fitting fully into the bellhousing b/c of that `****` or whatever (pic attached).

i then went back to advanced, compared the original starter to the new one and you could see the starters were similar, but the ones from advanced were about 1/16" too long. the guy at advanced told me "just file down the tip of the starter until it fits flush". i thought that was the absolutely wrong way to solve it. so i asked for my money back and then went to carquest across town and thank god they had a starter that matched up perfectly.

Wow, you don't even have to measure, you can see it.

I thought they rebuilt the cores? I know you got to bring an old one in or get charged?

Guess eventually folks eat the charges up to a point and they run out of cores. Then the dudes in Pakistan try to replicate their old patterns not knowing anything about a starter and this is what happens...

This is good to know!

yeah, i only compared the starters only so the guys at advanced auto could see they gave me the wrong starter ... twice, in a matter of an hour. i know it wasn't their fault, they only supply what the computer tells them will fit but at some point, someone has to know that **** isn't kosher.

and you are right, you have to give them your old starter or get charged a "$15 core charge"
