where did you get the starter from? i replaced my starter last week, picked one up at advanced auto, went home, and then proceeded to crack the casing on the starter b/c it didn't fit flush. i was thinking it would line up if i slowly tightened the bolts a turn at a time, then 'SNAP'.
took it back to advanced and luckily he exchanged it for a new one at no charge. went back home, and finally figured out it was not fitting fully into the bellhousing b/c of that `****` or whatever (pic attached).
i then went back to advanced, compared the original starter to the new one and you could see the starters were similar, but the ones from advanced were about 1/16" too long. the guy at advanced told me "just file down the tip of the starter until it fits flush". i thought that was the absolutely wrong way to solve it. so i asked for my money back and then went to carquest across town and thank god they had a starter that matched up perfectly.
I thought they rebuilt the cores? I know you got to bring an old one in or get charged?
Guess eventually folks eat the charges up to a point and they run out of cores. Then the dudes in Pakistan try to replicate their old patterns not knowing anything about a starter and this is what happens...
This is good to know!

and you are right, you have to give them your old starter or get charged a "$15 core charge"
