Pat, the Town just went through a property value re-assessments. An out of county firm was used (where they jump the property values as they feel like it). Lots of property owners really upset about this, as the firm is not familiar with the area. Some re-assessments have been reduced by as much as $100,000 when owners complained. Which means the assessment was way high to begin with. For example: I have a separate parcel of land that according to the building code is too small to build a house on. (.97 acre). Assessment went from $2000 to $11800. I complained to the assessor, now assessed at $3300. Which is still above nearby land assessed at $2000/acre.
I feel your pain, George. They raised our property taxes $1,000 last year, then, a state tax commission said that the county wasn't charging 78,000 residents enough, so they are demanding that the county raise taxes on all the homes in certain areas of town 7% more. I can guarantee we'll be fighting that.
