AC compressor removal

The belts on my 1989 aerostar 3.0 are lookin pretty bad. I'm going to replace them soon, I was wondering if its possible to remove the AC compressor and just use a smaller sized serpentine belt to compensate. Has anyone done this and know what size belt I will need or have a part number for the proper belt?

AC compressor removal

Is there a problem with the compressor pulley that you need to remove it? Often when a vehicle has no AC, then there is an Idler pulley installed where the compressor would normally be, so as to get the proper angle and tension on the rest of the accessory drive pulleys. It is rarely just a matter of using a shorter belt, though it may be possible if there is no other interfering objects in the way and you can apply sufficient belt tension. If the compressor pulley is in good shape I would just leave it as it is, even if you arent planning to use the AC. And remember if there is one selling point that a vehicle has, it is whether it is equipped with AC, working or not.

As a side note, have you ever removed a compressor on a 3.0 Aerostar? It is a REAL PAIN IN THE RUMPUS!

Nice Van!! You should get the rocker panels and door bottoms repaired though. We have another Aerostar in the yard which we bought for parts. It is a 3.0Liter 1990 Aerostar and the previous owners did NOT take care of it and they let it rust. The transmisson was shot when we got it. Now it is just a rusting pile of junk!!

ANY little spot of rust bubbles, you should take seriously.. A rust buble WILL trap moisture and speed up the rusting!!
