I bought a new Actron (CP9690 Elite Auto scanner. It supposedly can do both OBDII and OBDS l vehicles and comes with a host of connector adapters including the adapter for a 1985 F150.
I connected everything, used the scroll down to the proper year and make and attempted to use the diagnostics. When I did so it flashed a message that I needed to connect the vehicle.
As the vehicle was already connected, this puzzled me. I disconnected the connector, reconnected it and had the same issue. I cleaned the vehicle's connectors (there's the main orange connector and a smaller single connector). Still, the Actron gives me the same message.
Any ideas as to what I'm missing will be helpful to me so I can get this scanner to pull my codes.
Un-bolt the OBD port and drop it down so you can see where the harness wires feed into it from the back. Use an electronic parts cleaner such as CRC Electronic Cleaner or equivalent. Re-connect the reader while the OBD port is loose so you can wiggle wires to see if there is a loose connection on any of the wires feeding into the back of the port. If the port needs a ground, use a jump wire from the port to a clean metal surface at the dash near where the port bolts to.
The port is actually already loose; it just dangles by it's wires. If I use a jump wire connected to the port, which wire would I connect to?
What I meant by loosen the port, was so you could gain access to the back of it to clean it where the wires go into the back of it. If the port "body" is grounded at the dash ,then run a jump wire from the port body to the dash to secure a ground. The fact that it is dangling may very well be the problem as it may need to be grounded. Bolt the port back up to the dash with a clean, bare metal ground, then try again to connect the reader.
OK, but that statement alone doesn't benefit me in the least. I posted the pics. Please tell me why you think the scanner isn't working.
Thanks!!
OK... lets take it down a notch, relax. First off: year,engine,carb,trans.etc. ease up a little. Old trucks take patience....imagine dealing with a 1955 Ford Truck?
Easy....slow down. It's all good.
I came here for help. Clearly, you can't or won't offer it. So stop the game. If you don't want to help, let someone else respond that has something to offer.
OK, I fail to see any "game". And I fail to see any other response. The members of FTE take their "OWN" time and knowledge to respond to inquiries concerning mechanical questions....They are NOT paid professionals. If they were..then they should be paid well above and beyond given their expertise !
