Can anyone give me some useful tips on how to remove my 8BA Flathead V8 camshaft..everything else is removed from engine block and I'm really unsure where to begin.
Thanks
Just carefully pull it out the front. The lobes will tend to catch on the bearings, and could scratch them, so support it near the back with one hand and at the front with the other.
I'm trying to pull it out from the front but it's stuck I'm afraid to force it. .maybe I need a puller attached to that round plate that gets bolted to the block?
Take off the cover on the back (oil pump drive cover), and tap it forward with a rubber mallet. Note which way it rotates as it moves forward, and rotate the camm that way as you pull it forward.
Yes it rotates freely. .I'll try taking that cover off in the back and tap with a rubber mallet and rotate as mentioned. Thanks I'm calling it a day. Back to it tomorrow
Typical varnish buildup. Most will do that, use a little brake cleaner. And when
installing new cam bearings make sure the rear bearing hole is dead on with the
block for the fuel pump push rod. After all installed with cam, sometimes the
cam will be a little stiff. We clamp a radiator hose on a drill clamped to the
cam and run it in dripping oil down the main bearing holes.
Ok..got the cam out..only thing left in my block is that oil pump idler gear..pretty sure that's what it is.
Is that gear sitting on a shaft in the block that needs to be tapped out?? appears that way. I don't want to hit on it because it looks as though the engine block will get in the way of that gear which reaches in a bit..please have a look at my first picture above before I got the cam out.
How am I'm going to get it all back together with all the correct clearances and balancing etc. Guess I'll be back to you guys on that one later on.
You guys have been a huge help and I'm very appreciative!
The idler gear isn't visible in any of your pictures. The shaft it rides on is pressed into the block, you need a special puller to get it out. Unless the fit of the gear on its shaft is loose, I'd leave it. Are you having the block tanked?
I believe the shop charged me $50 to assemble the crank, with rods and pistons, cam and valves. I could do it myself but for $50, I couldn't pass it up. I'd see what they want to do yours.
If you need to pull the oil pump gear, it is pressed in. You need a long piece. (18") or so of 3/8" allthread. Home depot or lowes has it. A nut and few large washers along with the biggest impact socket you have. And make an impromtu puller. The allthread screws right into the center of the gear. Then just tap it out. Some take quite a bit of effort. Or if youve got a dent puller adapt the 3/8 " allthread to that, then youve got some weight instead of a light weight socket.
Thanks for these tips! I have the 337ci engine, and the cam moves freely, but it only seems to want to move about 1/4" when I pull it forward. I will try tapping the eccentric (not the bushing) on the other end. Is that the preferred way?
The manual says the eccentric must be removed to allow the cam to be removed. I assume it is keyed to the cam? Never worked on a 337, but that seems likely.
Yes, that's what I read, too. But the manual shows the picture of the "bushing" being removed, whcih is a no-brainer. Not sure what you mean "keyed to the cam", so do I need some sort of puller?
