Hi guys, maybe you can help a newbie out. I have been looking at new trucks and I have fallen in love with the f250 sd. I need the supercrew and the 4x4. My question is this. I drive mostly L.A. freeways, but I do have a place in the mountains. I do not tow much, maybe a small boat ( if I talk my wife into it). I do haul some work items 1000-1500 lbs. I test drove the 5.4 and it felt very sluggish. I like the idea of the 6.8 power but mileage concerns me a little. I am trying to get a truck with the same power that my 94 f150 with the 5.8 has. I have 213000 miles on it and it has never broken down on me!! Would the 5.4 with the 4.1 rear end be similar to what I have or is the 6.8 with the 3.73 a better fit? Thanks for your help!!
The mileage is not enough to worry about. If your towed load is 6000 or less 3.73 otherwise 4.30. You'll never hear anyone complain about too much power, only not enough.
I have the V10 with 3.73 gears and average 11cty/15hwy. I have read that the 5.4 only gets around 1-2 mpg better. I love the V10 because it is so smooth and has the power to tow large loads when the need arises. The 6.8L is basically the 5.4L with the addition of 2 cylinders. I would test drive both and purchase the one you like the best. Either way, you won't be disappointed in the SD.
Go with the V-10, the mileage difference is very small. I am getting 13.5-14 on average and that is with my foot into it. The cost for the V-10 is only $600 more so that is a power upgrade you can't ignore. Yes the 5.4 will do, but why even consider it since the mileage is maybe 2MPG more at best.
I could not be happier with my truck. The 5.4 will do everything you have described and alot more. Go drive one with the 4.10 gears and see how you like it.
Something to think about...1-2 mpg better is 38-76 more miles per tank, if you get a long bed. I am averaging about 14 city/hwy.
I ordered mine, and considered the V10, the $500 (invoice) more was not an issue. I just think they sound funny.
