I bought a 85 ford one ton with a 6.9 diesel from a neighbor who was moving, I tested the glow plugs ,all bad, while replacing them I removed one with the tip completely missing, it appears to have been gone sometime as there was carbon where the tip attatched, the engine turns ok but I don't know if the tip passed thru without doing damage or is still lodged in the pre-combustion chamber,I tried to blow it out by turning the engine over, no luck although the cylinder seemed to have lots of compression, I'm open to any suggestion, also the controller seem to be bad and I would like to bypass it, is the fuel shut off on the injector pump routed thru the controller or straight from the ignition, I havn't worked on a diesel sinced the forties and I'm not that strong anymore, just how does the controller break apart or do I still leave it attatched and removed the wire from it to the relay. Thank you William
Howdy William,
There was a recent discussion on the glow plug tip problem, you might try to find it and you can go to ziggsters page for tips. http://www.members.shaw.ca/k2pilot/
I bypassed my controller on my 86 6.9 using the directions on the above page and it was really easy. I used a push button instead of a toggle, less prone to accidently getting turned on.
Good Luck, Kelly
Thanks Kelly, I tried blowing air thru the glow plug and a vacuum at the injector opening but had no success, the truck had been parked for about six months and from the looks of the old glow plug the the tip had been missing for some time, I still have to bypass the controller and then I'll try and fire it up.
