1993 Bronco 5.8L E4OD. Shudder caused by failing torque converter. Dorpped pan, fluid clean and red in color. No metal or friction material pieces found. Have 154,000 miles on trans. What is the life expectancy of this trans. Do I just repalce the torque converter or do the tranny also?

With 154,000, you are doing pretty good. A tranny can be expected to need a rebuild at that mileage(some don't but on average...)
You could try replacing the TC and see what happens but if you plan to keep the truck for a long time I would bite the bullet. If you do just replace the TC, I would recommend you do a tranny flush while you are at it just to make sure there are no bits floating around in the valve bodies etc.
