2000 Excursion V10 4wd
Its been a while since I've posted here but I'm wondering if anyone can lend some suggestions with this new to me Excursion I picked up. Its got the V10 and runs great, very strong. But I have some issues with the 4 wheel drive. I will be going down the road, and it sounds like the 4wd will try engaging. It happens at anytime and at any speed. It does seem to happen more after going over a bump, but not always. It makes a grinding noise, and if you slow to around 10mph or less, the noise goes away, and you usually can continue on your way. Sometimes it doesn't do it at all, and sometimes, like tonight, it will do it 10+ times. I took it to the Ford dealer around here about 2 months ago for the same issue, they did 2500 dollars worth of work replace all of the hubs, some kind of switch, a tie rod etc etc and they assured me this was the issue. Truck ran great for the 2 months and then all of a sudden BAM here I am same issue. It almost seems to me to be worse than before but that just may be because I am getting frustrated. Any advice or input is appreciated. A couple questions. Can I make this a 2wd truck? I don't necessarily NEED the 4wd, even in 2wd during snow storms this truck has no problems. Secondly, is there any ideas of what this could be? Anyone ever heard of this before? I am going to call the dealer tommorrow and ask if the work has any kind of warranty or guarantee on it. Thanks for any input / advice!

Yes you can make it 2wd. Just remove the front drive shaft between the transfer case and front differential. I've done this before when I had a bad front pinion bearing. Just remove the u-joints and shaft and keep them somewhere safe in the garage.
Thanks for the reply! I am thinking atleast for the summer months I may just take that driveshaft out so I don't have to worry about it, depending on what the guys at the dealer say.
Also, This is the switch activated on the dashboard type, I should have specified that.
I also should have specified that when it is making the noise, if I slow down to 30 or so and flip it into four wheel drive with the switch, the noise goes away. But now when I put it in four wheel drive it won't come out of four wheel drive unless I come to a complete stop and put it in reverse for 15-20 ft, and then it will come out of 4wd. Also the truck pulls to the right rather hard when in 4wd now, it never did that before.
