under coating

If you mean the bitumen type underseal I found heating it with a hot air gun then scraping with a paint scraper worked

If its a paint then I would try a acid based paint stripper

I have been spraying mine with WD-40. It has been loosening it up enough to brush to metal and wipe off with a rag or whatever.

I am not sure who did the undercoating on my 79, but it was on it when I bought it in 1984. The WD-40 definitely cuts this undercoating. I picked up a gallon can of the stuff as it is much cheaper that way and use a spray bottle to apply it. It doesn't leave any bad fumes like other solvents do.
