I recently purchased a used 1998 E-350 box truck with a PS and 4R100 auto trans.
I developed a shutter after it shifted into overdrive, with light throttle and a slight load (hill). When the shutter starts if I turn the over drive off it stops. At slower speeds it does it after it warms up right before it should kick down a gear.
It's been to the shop under warranty twice. First for eleven days and they put a new converter in. Then for 16 days and they put a new TCCS (torque converter control solanoid) in and Ford factory trans fluid. Picked it up tonight and the longer I drove it the worst it would get. About 30 miles home, picked it up in Denver and drove to about 8700 ft altitude in the foothills. Biggest problem is I tow my racecar with it and leave for the Runoffs in Ohio in 3 weeks and don't want any problems.
If a complete fluid change (15-16 qts) did not fix the torque converter shudder you will probably need to replace at least the torque converter. If you are at high mileage (100,000+) consider OH of the transmission. You will already have the transmission out of the vehicle which is a large part of the labor charges for OH.
They put a new converter in it the first time and no improvement. The second time they put a new torque converter control solanoid and no improvement. It has 108K and was a Ryder Logistics long term lease vehicle.
I'm droping it off at the shop (again) Monday and want some info so they don't try and snow me.
