I have '93 F150 with the 4.9L I6 and I want to upgrade the ignition/ coil. I have seen hotter coils advertised but I dont know what to use. I would also like to install a MSD ignition. What should I buy and how do I install it? Will I have to upgrade any thing else like the wires or rotor or anything. I appreciate any responses.
I love my msd box, the one i have now is ion it's second vehicle. My advice is to ask other I-6 owners who have it and what they think of it, if you do get one, keep it simple. Don't get the series 7 with off road capability and integral timing control...get a 5 or a 6. They are relatively easy to install, even easier if you buy the appropriate wiring harness as well. Get thicker wires, and new plugs with a bit wider gap. about .010 or .015 more should do, no more than .060.
Hey ther sharpshot31054 and welcome to FTE!
You don't say why you want to upgrade. If your engine is going to see the better side of 5,000 to 6,000 rpm, I might consider it, or if you take it off-road for 6-8 hours constant, I might consider it.
If it's just something to add on for fuel mileage, you may just want to up-grade from Ford. It'll save you a couple hundred dollars and still reap the rewards. You can still use a Super Stock coil from Accel, but I wouldn't use anything with much higher voltage than that. Talk with you later....
