I have a 1955 f100 and the stock steering column is on its last legs. I have read many posts on swapping in a new steering column. I am confused on what columns to look for and how to swap them into my ford? I am not picky on make. Just need to upgrade and be cost effective.
Ideally, of course, the easiest way would to be replace yours with another of the same model/year. But, since they are getting pretty rare, that may not be the cheapest way. Have you looked at the Flaming River or Ididit columns? They are both quality and, from what I have read, good, easy to install replacements.
Do a search for 55/56 steering column replacement on here. There are several threads that will help you.
Jerry,
You are aware your column & steering gear are one piece aren't you?
What's "on its last leg" on your current coulmn. There's not a lot to go wrong on them compared to modern day columns.
Most (if not all) of the aftermarket replacement columns are for use with replacement steering box or rack and pinion. Not sure what options you have if you want to keep original steering box. I used a 77 cutlass floor shift tilt column with a mustang 2 rack and pinion.
