Firewall rust repair

Looking for some feedback on properly addressing some rust I found. This is underneath the wiper cowl on the firewall. Looking into the cowl via the slots Ford stamped into it, I can see no signs of corrosion so I believe it's just the outer layer of metal. I don't see any signs of the cowl area sagging so I don't think it's escalated into a structural concern. I am hoping to simply cut out the affected areas and weld in some new metal. I will be taking the cab off and anticipate laying it on its back so I don't have to work upside down.

Has anyone addressed this sort of issue? Any feedback or suggestions on doing it right?

Thanks!

I have found that usually the rust a person sees from the outside is only about 1/3 of what is really there. So brace yourself for that possibility. I think my concern would be what is on the backside of the firewall when welding. If the cab interior/dash is gutted then no problem in that department. gary

Gutting is in progress and will be complete prior to any welding. I am hoping to be able to see the back side of this from inside the cab which will allow for an even more thorough inspection and repair. I will be completely removing the cab from the frame and will probably lay it on its back to do the welding.

Check out the bottom of this page of Bryanmartins` build. It will give you some inspiration, or make you cringe thinking about having to do all that work.

Good info... I'm hoping I don't have to do this. I could see any rust in the wiper cowl are but I do need to figure out how to get paint in there.

Has anyone considered fixing the rust then replacing the open vent with a door like on the 56 or replacing the intake to a different location. would remove the cause of water/rust.Maybe even will try to add a cabin filter. Any thought on possible different vent intake option? I have do the rust repair the cab is off to media blasting now we will see how much repair i have to do
Was kind of gross with what i found in the ventilation path would not really call it fresh air
