Extended warranty

Hi all. Haven't been on for a while cause my truck never breaks. I got a solicitation today for an extended warranty. It seems to be from Ford but it's called "Ford protect". What happened to ESP?? Is Ford protect now the best to use or are they blowing smoke up my dress. Thanks and yeah I'm too lazy to search.

Send your dealer an email and ask for a quote for the powerstroke extended warranty and see what happens. (You don't have to get up) lol

Looks like it has has the name changed from ESP to Ford Protect.

Ford Protect Extended Service and Maintenance

(On edit: it looks like ESP is part of the larger Ford Protect umbrella.)

Agreed, ESP appears to still be there.

OK, I got a quote. Over $4300 for coverage to 125K with 200 deductable. Seems like when I last looked into ESP for my 08 it was around 2200. Almost double now. Besides, the drive train is covered already to 60,000 and the engine to 100,000 right. That's where the big money is.

The web site didn't give me many options. I wouldn't mind a 1000 dollar deductable. you know coverage for big ticket items. When I blew the head gasket on the 08 it cost me over 5000 but I added a couple things like EGR block off and head studs. Still, that was a tough check to write.

Any suggestions? I guess I need to make up my mind soon, I'm at 33000 miles.

Search online for a better deal, I saw an 8 year, 125,000 mile, $200 deductible plan for your truck for about $2800. You don't have to buy from your dealer, but you might ask for the same deal as you found online.

You would be very wise to Google "Flood Ford ESP"

One additional train of thought to save a little money on the purchase of an ESP is don't buy more than you need.

I was looking at going with the most miles and years as possible. However, it truth I am averaging less then 12K miles per year. I am coming up on my 3 year mark with 32K miles on the odometer. When taking this into consideration I am now only going to go for a 6 year 75K ESP.

I figure in another 3 years I will either be ready to park my butt in something new to drive or too old to keep climbing into this 4x4 dually with ease.

I get that. I'm 73 and thinking by 80 if I'm still on the green side I'll probably not want to do as much RVing. But, the extendeds are supposed to be cheaper if you buy before the 3 year expires. With the drive line covered to 60K and the engine to 100K I'm not sure an extension is worth it. I mean the engine and transmission are where the big costs are. That navigation system shoots craps I'll just hang my tom tom up. I like it better anyway. I think I the quote I got was to age 80. I guess I could get a quote for 5 more years and 100K and see what that would cost.

Thanks, I'll go there. On edit Thanks for the tip, that's a major difference. I don't know how to account for the difference but the price there at flood is about half what I was offered earlier.

First off, I am aiming this next comment directly at you StanleyZ. It's good to see you back on the forum, it has been awhile.

Now back to the original subject of the ESP. I understand what you are saying about the factory warranty seeming to cover most everything that you on face value would cover. However, when you think of just a few of the non covered items such as a radiator leak, which seems to be more common than you would think. It is not covered by a warranty past the 36/36,000 period. That is an approx. $1,500 repair. Folding tow mirrors seem to have more than their share of failures, again a very expensive repair if paying out of pocket. And this is without getting into the electronics in the cabin alone, everything from power seats to that big oversized entertainment center that controls so much more than a radio, navigation and phone. The miles of wiring maze under the dash could be a nightmare to trace if there was ever an electrical gremlin.

I remember a few years ago I had a Superduty F250 that developed some major electrical problems that involved numerous trips to the dealership for tracing the issue down. Luckily I was still under my 36/36 warranty by a couple of hundred miles. The problem was a chaffed wire where the tilt steering wheel would crimp the wire harness.

It is amazing how many different parts are attached to the engine and drivetrain that are not considered part of the actual engine and or drivetrain.

I'm not a big believer in extended warranties in general. But, given the complications and possibility of having to pay shop book rate out of pocket
for even a minor issue that could result in major expense I am looking at the purchase of an ESP more along the line of an insurance policy. I don't want to have to use it, but I don't want to take a chance of spending more out of pocket than what the ESP would have cost.

Again, it's good to see you back online.

Yeah, you are of course right. I've just had such good luck with these trucks. This is my third super duty. The 7.3L was perfect for 120K miles. The 6.4 had some glitches but the only big one was self inflicted because I had a senior moment and towed in the wrong tune. It only had 70K on it when I got hit and totaled and I'm certain that truck is still running somewhere. This 6.7 has not had any problems. So, maybe I'm just lucky but it's been 15 years without an issue that an extended warranty would cover. But, it's like they say about stocks "past performance is no guarantee of future performance". I do have to make up my mind soon though.

I am at 33,000 on my 2014. I purchased the premium care extended warranty for 48K or 48m when I bought the truck. I got a quote from my dealer to extend that to the following with a $100 deductible before 36K on the clock:
60m or 60K- $2260
60m or 75K- $3030
