Gas mileage problem

Ok, for once this isn't about my truck. My dad's 88 F-250 superduty has 130,000 miles on it. Its got a 351 and automatic tranny (dont know which one). I'm familiar with my truck...but not very much with his cuz mines a 95 and a lot different. He's been getting abotu 7-9 mpg he told me today and i'm wondering where we should start to look for the problem. My dads pretty mechanically inclined, hes changed the O2 sensor but that didnt help much. I dont think there is a vacuum leak because he'd know to look. Where else should i look? Shoudl be expecting about 13-14 mpg on this truck, thats what it used to get.

The transmission is probably a C6, the AOD wasn't offered in HD trucks, and the E40d didn't come out til 1989. So without OD, your not gonna get great mileage. I would recommend replacing the coolant temp sensor, and testing the others.

Cut down on the air drag too

How can i tell for sure that its the C6, i'm pretty sure it is a C6 though, 4 speed. He never had great gas mileage, the truck is huge. It's an extended cab with an 8 foot bed. Has a one ton frame, brakes, and suspension. It has a 1,000lb cap on it too. It is also 4 wheel drive so it loses some there too. He told me he used to get about 11-12mpg but he told me he gets like 6-8 now so i think there is a problem somewhere. That tired 351 has had a ruff life and probably needs a little TLC.
