I pulled the drive out of the gear box, the gear looks okay, spin the gear and the speedo registers so the cable is okay as well as the head. Checked inside the gear box and i can see a gear that would engage with the plastic speedo gear but the speedometer still won't work.
Could the gear inside the gear box not be engaging the plastic speedo gear ?
If you spin the speedo head and the needle moves, chances are it's ok. The speedo cable moves freely in the casing? No binding? The gear on the end of the cable looks good? No mushed over teeth? Sometimes they get worn down. If all the above look good, I'd take a good look at the drive gear in the tranny, most likely it's worn or stripped.
Ok did you by chance put in a new cable? I did this one time, what happened is the cable was just a little too long and when it was all together it wouldnt work. There was too much pressure on the cluster and even though the cable was turning the speedo didnt register. So try this, loosen the cable end at the cluster a couple turns, if the speedo works you can do one of two things. First make a shorter cable and try, or if you look at the back of the cluster there is a brass bushing that the cable goes into. If this is worn you can try this for a temp fix, pull on the brass part untill there is a gap and put one wrap of fishing string to make a temp bushing. (My dad did this on my old small window 56 and it worked for over 20,000 miles )
It sounds crazy I know. But if you disconnect the cable at the cluster you'll be able to tell if it is worn there.
