Compared to my 97' f350, my 07 f150 tailgate feels like it weighs half as much. I don't know what the dimension difference is, but that f150 tailgate has to have way thinner steel to it, so I could believe that something like that could happen.

The reason that the F150 tailgate feels so much lighter is because starting in 2004 Ford started installing a torsion bar inside the gate. Which makes it feel much much lighter than it really is. If you ever actually remove the tailgate from the truck, then you'll feel the true weight of the tailgate. Although I'm not positive of the weight capacity of these tailgates, I can tell you that the tailgates of my dentside and bullnose trucks were each rated to support up to 500lbs. Anything more will damage a tailgate.

Wow, never knew that. Thinking about it now, I guess weight difference felt with the torsion bar helper would really make the tailgate a feather weight if it was the true weight.
