Probably a dumb question but I'm looking for ideas on where to mount a cb antenna. Can't go on the roof or it won't fit in the garage, and I have to leave the bed rails open for camper shell/truck camper. Other ideas? The antenna in mind is just a 2' stick antenna and it's just for occasional use ... no need to talk to Mars with it.
I have a 18" antenna that mounts on my rear window it works pretty good I get about 3 miles of range. It also screws off real easy to get into your garage. If you look at my users gallery click on the rear view of my truck on the size number 2 and look in the upper left corner and you'll see it.
I have seen them mounted in the hood/fender crease. I have also seen them mounted to a special mount that goes in the stake pocket but extends the CB Ant out to the side so you can still fit a tonoue cover or topper on it.
I would mount it on the drivers side fender even with the FM radio antenna using a Larsen NMO Antenna and a L Brkt. You can check them out at ham radio supply places. You will be looking for one for 11 meter radios.
I used a couple of hold downs for a shell. They are aluminum so I had an extension welded to the top of the clamp so it extended past the side of the truck bed. I drilled the extensions to take the antennaes. I routed the wires through the vinyl covers for the holes is the front of the bed, under the cab and into the cab through another vinyl cover in the floor of the cab and to the CB. The whips bend to go into my garage but it should be simple enough to work out a swivel arrangement for the antennae so they fold back along the bed iif it is a problem.
If you have the TT mirrors, I have seen them mounted on the horizontal bars with a mirror clamp mount. Personally, mine is a magnet on the rear of the roof.
Ive never had a CB so i dont know if they need to be on the top or whatever, but is there any way you could actually mount it to the frame between the cab and the bed where it would stick up through that crack?
If you don't already own the radio, you might consider a hand held portable model. I would think the weakness would be less range, but you could take it in other vehicles as well. My brother owns an RV and he's looking at that as an alternative. I think you can look at them on Radio Shack's website.
I mounted my CB antenna opposite of the radio antenna (driver side cowl). There is enough room underneath the cowl to place the adapter and I drilled the cowl for it to feed through, and put a rubber grommet around it ( it is slotted so it fits the hole in the cowl). I also added a 1/2" spacer underneath and just to the outside of where the adapter is mounted so it has more side-to-side support. I am using a K-40 4 ft. wire-wound whip that is adjustable. My only picture in my gallery does not show what my truck currently looks like. I willl try to post some more pictures this weekend.
