I have a leaking freeze plug on my 1994 Ranger ... anyone have experience replacing one? suggestions on how to do it right? It is the plug on the front of the drivers side cylinder head (1994 Ranger, 4x4, 4.0L, supercab, manual trans)
Hey there flowd and welcome to FTE! I know it's not in the manuals, but here goes. Drain the radiator fluid. Remove the neg battery cable. Drill a small hole into the center of the freeze plug. If you have a slide hammer, screw that in and pull it out. Clean up the area. put a small amount of RTV around the new plug. Use a socket that just fits inside the new plug and drive it in flush to the head. Let it cure for about an hour, you can start putting everything back together and grab a bite to eat. Run it to temp and check for leaks. Should be all set to go. You may want to pick up one or two extra plugs, in case one goes in crooked or gets damaged on install. Good luck and we'll talk with you later....
Scooter29 ... thanks for the assist. Your instructions worked well ... plug is replaced and NO LEAKS! The one problem I had was tapping the new plug in. It kept rolling. The solution was to freeze the plug (go figure ... "freeze plug") and wait for the hot part of the day to install ... I suppose careful use of a torch would also work to expand the port. Anyway, thanks again.
Hey flowd! Long time no hear! Glad it worked for you! I'll have to try the Freezing part on my next rebuild! Mine usually roll, tilt, bend, but after awhile it was getting old. I bought an installer for a few bucks from a friend a few years ago and all has worked out since. What did you use for the install tool? Socket, pipe, rod?
Either way, I'm glad you are getting the engine back in shape and hopefully on the road again....
Talk with you later buddy!!!!
Yeah, me too. Hopefully, you'll only need to do it once! I should keep my mouth shut when my friends need a hand! HEE HEE!
But then ist not every day you get to spend someone else's money to do stuff you can only think about anymore. I do the things I need to do. No more performance enhancements or blown big blocks for me. I miss it to an extent.
I'm glad some of the younger generation are considering this type of vocation, instead of sitting behind a computer writing software....
Talk with you later....
