I have a question for StrangeRanger

At one time I did some research on a engine an you provided a lot of info indepth, so with that in mind I have a question once again. From some of the answers you have provided it seems you have a little more indepth knowledge of the engine than the average poster. I submitted a post on cooling my engine recently, maybe you looked at it? It went into some discussion on how my running my v-8 at 150 was doing some real damage to the engine. I would like your point of view on this. I am not doubting what was posted by others I am only looking for a second opinion, again, some good points were made just looking for another perspective. Thank you for your time

150? I didn't even know they made thermostats that low, I can't imagine why. Use at least a 180, preferably higher. Most engines make max power somewhere around 220°F water temperature but the gains above 190°F aren't significant. The only reason I know of (and it's not a very good one) for running a 160°F thermostat is to trick the EFI system into running rich.

Use a full-flow stat like a Robertshaw, not some store brand POS. Make sure your radiator is bringing the temperature down 40-60°F and you should be good to go. If you're concerned about cooling add an oil cooler and take the heat out where it'll do the most good.

I have a question for StrangeRanger

StrangeRanger,
It sounds like you have some experience with engine oil coolers. Any suggestions on what type to try? I was thinking of installing one on my 75 F-250 4x4 390. It gets a little warm here in the southwest and I thought that might help the old girl run a little cooler.

Appreciate the response. Honestly I cannot remember which thermostat it is I went to get the right one and they did not have it, they had the lower one at the time so I thought the lower stat would do wonders. My gauge drops or shows the thermostat opening at 150 on the nose doesn't mean it is right just that is what it shows. So you would recommend a higher thermostat, thats what I needed to know, thanks again

Do you need an oil cooler? If your oil stays below 250°F then you're OK. Oil likes to be warm. Ideally, you want to get it to 212°F to boil out any condensated water. That translates into an in pan temp of around 190-195°F. As to a type, a stacked plate cooler is better than a fin and tube. Ford Racing sells a nice self-regulating unit for $120 list, including installation kit. Summit and Jeg's have many other options, many of which are less expensive.
