I just bought a 2002 Explorer with a 6 cylinder engine and the mileage stinks. It is supposed to get 17 city and 21 Highway. It had 29,000 miles on it when I bought it and I have put about 1000 miles on it since (all city driving). I have double checked the mileage and I am getting about 13.7 miles/gallon. i am concerned that there is some engine problem. It seems to run fine. Is this what everyone else gets or should I have the dealer check something? It is still under the factory warranty.
I wish I had some advice, but I don't. I bought a '97 with a 4.0 v6 with 105k, and I'm getting 16 mpg in the city. Hopefully it's a problem with your calculator. That'd be a cheaper fix. Ha.
I recently bought a 2002 Eddie Bauer and I get around 16 city and 20 highway. Now when my wife drives it, she gets more like 15 city. She has way too heavy of a foot and I think that is the difference. Perhaps your driving style pushes the milage down, no offense of course...
I have an 02 Mountaineer with the v6 4.0l sohc and I get 18.8 mpg according to the onboard info system. That's a mix of city and highway.... and I get about 15 mpg when towing my boat (20' Bayliner, ~2500 lbs)
I have an 03 Explorer 6 cyl with a little over 3K miles. Overall it is doing around 17 city and will do 22+ on the road. Wife and I both drive it very conservativly. This is comparable to what our '98 with the SOHC 6 did. The '98 had 3.70 gears and this has 3.55.

Mileage does sound kinda low... Just shooting in the dark here, but one of the several things that will affect mileage is if the charging system is working overtime. Something to look at if all else fails. I assume you're not running your tires at 8 lbs. jk.
Here are a few more tips, the air flow meter on my V8 limited wasn't working properly and mpg went down even though it ran good and sounded good. The dealership can test it to see Also an air filter that is 10,000 miles old even on hwy driving can suck 1-2 mpg, I get about 17.4 hwy 85 mph
Check the air filter. I know with my 2000 explorer if the filter has even 2 or 3,000 miles on it or is even a shady light dirty my mileage goes through the floor. Also, consider getting a Purolater air filter, they seem to get better mpg and airflow than Motorcraft.
I just bought a 2002 Mountaineer with just under 24k miles. MINT condition & was well taken care of. Had dealership run a carfax and all was OK. My only concern is the gas milage really sucks! I know it is a V8 ALL WHEEL DRIVE and weighs 4300 lbs but the computer tells me my gas milage is from 10 - 12 MPG (local/city driving). Is this about right or should I be concerned? The EGM new was I believe 14. I am not a lead foot either.
Any clues? Thanks in advance.
Around 16 MPG in our 2002 Mountaineer V6. Have gotten 19-20 on the highway.
Hey 2002mountowner, is your's noisey? Mine has a noise like tire singing coming from the transfer case that the dealer can't seem to fix.
I get about 13-14 mpg on my '02 X in the city. I rarely go over 35 mph and I sit at lights for about 10 minutes of my 25 minute commute (7.5 miles). I also have to push in the clutch about 120 times in that short distance. My X has 10,000 miles on it as of this morning.
When I mix in some highway driving, my mileage jumps up to 18+ mpg. I haven't done any trips with just highway driving, so I'm not sure what kind of mileage I can achieve.
Some thoughts:
* in winter, the air is denser, so you will need more fuel per engine stroke than in the summer
* with the cold weather, your vehicle is warming up longer (higher idle, less viscous oil, etc)
* with the cold weather, air pressure in your tires may have decreased considerably (30 psi summer ~= 25 psi winter)
* if you warm it up in the morning, during that time you are getting 0 mpg.
I have been getting the same mileage with my '02 4.0L, but only when the outside temp gets down in the single digits (deg F). I am doing city driving as well. Thought at first it might be the odometer, but that checked out OK with the handy-dandy GPS. Otherwise, I usually get 15-16 around town.
