might buy

hello all,
i currently drive a 2000 7.3 and i am very happy with my truck.
my wife has located a 2003, 6.0 XLT automatic with 220 + miles.
this would be her truck (as in very little towing)
any insite would be helpful.
this truck would be coming off of a used dealer lot - so no idea of/about previous maintenance.
i am currently working 3 states away so i will ask a friend to go look at it with her, however he is a dodge driver - so may not know what to look for/ask about.
again any help would be appreciated.

guess what i am asking is
1) pop the hood, any obvious signs of modifications or potential problems?
2) look under the truck - other than rust of frame damage, what to look for?
3) test drive - assuming no added gages, what to look/listen for? remember this truck will be coming off of a dealer lot - i would think that it will be be fresh, clean and new fluids

Coming off a dealer lot is NO guarantee that it will have new fluids and if it is not a Ford dealer it could have an aftermarket oil filter and cap that could/will create problems. Verify that it has the short oil filter cap, the tall replacement is a no no. The 6.0 needs Motorcraft/Racor filters to avoid problems. Non Ford dealers and a lot of other repair shops are not up on what are important maintenance/ repair issues on the 6.0 which is part of the reason for it's less than sterling reputation.

You likely haven't gotten many responses because we are all shaking our heads... If you look up in the 6.0 Tech Folder you will find a TON of info on what to look for on buying one of these used. But how savvy is your wife and the Dodge friend you are sending with her?

Read through that and a minimum would be something to read live data, from key on pre-start data points (PIDs), to how to check if the oil cooler is going south, and a whole bunch more...

Really, I am trying to help you here: an emotional 6.0 purchase can be a disaster or you could get lucky, but mostly it could be the former. Knowledge is king on buying any used vehicle, and the 6.0 can be wonderful if you find the right one, and then be sure it is maintained after purchase.

I have a pretty smart wife and some good friends, but I wouldn't send them out to buy my next vehicle, and that is just about any vehicle. But that is me...
