Sad duty this past week, cleaning out my mother's place after her passing. Among the stuff I found these. I remember they were a popular item back then, but had no idea they did it all the way back in '50. I think they were sent out free, in hopes of a donation?
I had forgotten about those. Being from Cincy I saw them all the time, as a kid. Never knew of anyone that actually lost/found their keys because of them but do recall them being on everyone's keychain.
Those absolutely were a fund raiser. Very similar to the way some organizations today might mail out return address stickers in hopes of guilting you into donating to their cause. Since the plate color schemes tended to change more frequently - not like today where the same plates collect so many update stickers that they are are old enought to vote.
Sorry to hear about your mom. I bought a 69 sportster one time and it had one on it from NE. Never kept it though. Those are some "back in the day" items.
For me, not very. I came across some that matched the original plates for my '56, which I also have. My parents were like Ross', they didn't throw anything out. I came across my Little League uniforms in a dresser drawer.
There's a segment of license plate collectors that also collect the little DAV tags too. They date back to the 30's/40's. I think it would be cool to have a set that matched my cars/trucks.
