Time for a change

OK - I'm in the mood for a change and have a few ideas.

Right now I'm running an Alpine double din 3 disc in-dash, 12 disc in console, factory amp on all doors (Pioneer 6x8's), Kicker amp pushing a 10" JL in a custom box in the rear panel where the factory sub usually goes.

What I need to know is what 10" subs everyone recommends that have the least sealed airspace needed. Need something decent too guys - no Radio Shack Realistic is gonna work...

With what I am thinking about, I do not have room for ports, so that is out. I am not building this for competition SPL, but for good balanced sound that I can balance throughout the range with the rest of the setup and still hard enough to know its there... The doors are getting traded for Quarts by the way...

So what is on your minds?!?!?!?!?

First the only MB Q's I liked where the Q series but i wouldn't spend that much. Have you heard the Ifinity perfects? Leave the pioneers in the rear doors. How old is the Alpine radio? I had the same one but my changer broke. The radio still works tho. Dont know why i still have it in my garage Obviously keep the radio if your happy with the options it has or if your bored with the looks, the new Alpines are sweet and might even be able to control your 12 disk changer. What ever front speakers you decide on, amp them. Right now I have my old pioneer 5x7's in the front doors (blew a JL speaker had to send them back for warrenty). At first they where in my escape powered by a pioneer radio and they sounded ok but now with over 100watts rms into them they sound nice. Not as good as my JL comps obviously but nice enough to keep me happy untill I get the JL's back. What is the power rating of the Kicker sub amp you have? You know I have to refer you to the eD subs Is .5 cu ft for a 10" small enough for you? Look at the specs for there K series sub There are going to be releasing an even less exspensive line of subs soon. Do you know the air space of that stealth box? You might get by, by changing the sub.

I think solobarics have about the smallest sealed airspace requirement out there, but all out power and quality for the money that is still within the parameters of your application; I'd agree with prplayboy and go w/ the kappa perfect sub. you can get one for about 100 bucks on ebay, and for the $, there's no other sub on the planet that even comes close.

I have been thinking about the kappas. I am not going to be using the box in there now, nor that space. I am going to fab fiberglass enclosures in the walls of the back, so I can keep my rear floor spacing.

I am not really tired of my Alpine yet, and it has changer controls on it. The new ones do look good, but I just can't bring myself to get one yet when this one is still operating perfectly and still looks good. I have the 883 with 3 disc changer in dash and fold down face w/ cassette behind.

The Infinity's are on my list for the fronts also, not just the MB's. The Kicker is gone along with the factory amp on the fronts, and will be replaced by something else. I don't know what yet because I haven't picked out my subs or others yet. I still have tweets and a few other spaces to map out, so the power will be the unlimited variable that I can control later.

Pr - you said you have a double din in your garage? What model and are you interested in getting rid of it?

Thanks guys....

Optikal - where you at?!?!?! I'm open to all opinions and thoughts... might not use them, but am open to them...

well id say an elemental design e10o...or if u are really strapped for space the e10k...or if u REALLY need space the e8a (recommended box size is about 2 tissue boxes big)...but then again i do love my perfect...and i recommend that also. why not go for a custom set of comps up front? i know tempe posted a cheap set up ($125ish) for focal? set up. seems like a solid combo...i cant think right now...mental block...but its good to have a familar face around to help also with the usuals =)

The Apine radio I have is the 3disk but with out the tapr player. The CD mechinism inside is messed up. Old girlfriend pulled and shoved it in (she was a beast lol). I sent it to Alpine but they said the cost to repair was more then the radio so they sent it back and it's still in the garage. The radio works and it still looks new. Shoot I even have an old Alpine tape player radio the is mint in the garage in the original box. Again I dont know why I still have them.
Cobra the eD subs are off the hook! Opt first put me on to them, then as I researched I found nothing bad about them so I ordered two 10's. $345 shipped and I had two of the best looking 10's I have seen/heard. I am very happy with them but as you stated in the begining of your post, your not looking for SPL or competition....lol thats what i said and now I'm trying hard to keep myself from selling the O's and getting the A's.
For comps go out and listen to the JL X series. Just remember when listening to comps most have adjustable cross overs and they will most likely be set to the normal/referance postion so if you feel the tweeters are to brite but love the way they sound you can turn the tweets down a few DB. They has been a lot of recomendations and links posted for people looking to do upgrades so search some of the previous pages. You should find Temps custom comps on one also. Cant remember the date it was posted. If you want real musical bass MB Q's sub is hot! I heard two 10's and trust me he didn't need the two for the type of bass those things where reproducing. All in the set up i know but they where nice, Not my type of bass but nice.

Depth and volume are my largest problems at the moment. I really don't want to go smaller than a 10, simple for personal preference. If you picture the rear of an Explorer, the side walls above the fenderwell and between the fenderwell and back seat - that is where I am going to mount them. I am taking the side walls out and fiberglassing some type of enclosure to the rear of the plastic. I am trying to keep from having the sub stick out any farhter than the front of the wall. Amps will be mounted either under the rear seat, or the walls will be cut in the rear and amps fiberglassed there also - just depends on what physical size the amps are I end up going with. X-overs can go anywhere I need also...

For the doors - It will go between these:

or

http://www.mbquart.com/2003/en_US/pr...&model=PCE+216

Subs are going to be my headache. We'll see I guess...

You should be able to get 1 cu ft back there which a lot of 10's can play in. Why not duplicate the JL stealth box but to the volume you want.

That is basically what I want to do, but on the flip side of the fenderwell (closest to the back of the seat). I can make it out of cardboard first, then fiberglass it - but each type sub has different depths and needs different depths behind the magnet for a quality sound. I have plenty of room to conform the box to get cubic airspace, but I want it to be deep enough to get a good sound also. Most subs that use little airspace need less depth - that is why I wanted to start with them and see what options are out...

I haven't looked for a set of subs in a while, so that's where this comes from... I trust you and Optikal's opinions...

I cant remember right now but I think the eD 10's require a 5 or 6 in depth minimum.
