I have a 80 F-150 with a 400 stock. I want to put an edelbrock performer intake on it along with the edelbrock 4bbl carb (1406) and edelbrock cam to match.I know the biggest bang for my bucks is going to be puttnig the 351C pistons and bushings in this bad boy. But I don't really want to spend a whole lot of money on the engine at this time b.c I want to fix the interior and exterior up. So, what I want to put on the engine, is it worth it without putting the new pistons in it? Or am I just waisting my time until I install the pistons? Thanks for your all's response.
Go with headers first, they are the biggest "bang" for the buck.
Many people don't do the 4V conversion correctly and end up with lower performance and worse fuel mileage. Take a look at some of the fuel mileage guys here have reported after "conversions"...
I have an '80 F100. The first performance mods I done were installing a Holley 2300 2v 500cfm carb and a set of headers with 2 1/4 duals. The carb is a direct bolt on and the headers are a tight fit and require some thermowrap to avoid getting a hot starter.
The changes were noticeable and I even got a little better mileage. I was pleased with that setup for a while, you probably will be too. It had very good throttle response and cruised good as well.
Over the past few months I've done a complete rebuild and added the 4v setup, cam upgrade, 351C pistons, etc. If you are contemplating this, be sure to save up plenty of cash.
