Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I have a 06 6.0 f-250 it cranks but won't start untill I pull the secondary fuel filter cap off and seems to vent air in the system out then it starts right up. I can't figure out where it's sucking air. Here's my question I changed the fuel sending unit in the tank a few weeks ago and had a hard time seating the lid on top of fuel tank. If it is not completely seated will this cause air in the fuel system and give me the headache I've been dealing with?
The ring not sealed on top of tank would introduce water. Did you change both fuel filters, upper and lower, lower being mounted on the frame rail lately?
You may have fudged the lower filter O-ring on the HFCM, frame mounted filter. You are sucking air at that point. Check that out. A loose connection between the pump and tank would also introduce air. I would look over the previous tank repair since that is the starting point.
Also I forgot to mention that once I get it started it runs perfect. Also after I turn it off the next time I crank it it's a 50/50 shot if it will start. Seems like the longer it sits the lees chance I have it will start. Also it parks on an incline don't know if that matters or not.
This happened only once before the sending unit c/o, but that time it was my battery's so I changed them and the alternator too. This definitely seems to be fuel related. Could I maybe have a weak fuel pump?
Update, I changed both fuel filter housing caps with new o rings and checked all fuel lines for leaks couldn't find anything. So far so good with start ups I'll keep my fingers crossed and see what happens.
You can add a fuel pressure gauge to the port (Metric) on the upper fuel filter, not a bad idea to keep an eye on fuel pressure. Report back if things change. How many miles on your truck?
148,000 on truck. Yes I will do that. Truck started fine all day yesterday and today then I went to grab my kids some food tonight and bingo no start again
With a fuel pressure gauge you can see how long it takes to bleed air out of the system after it's been opened, usually 15-30 seconds (1-2 key cycles) depending on how much air is in the system:
