When the motor is cold, or even warm but hasn't run long, it starts instantly, with just a bump of the starter. Once it has run for a little while, it has to turn over several times before it starts, and the starter seems to be straining to turn it.
I'm using dual Optima batteries, and I've run 1/0 welding cable with soldered ring terminals to everything... winch, alternator, starter, grounds from body to motor to frame... the alternator is 160 amp, got it out of a wrecker.
Think timing might be too advanced? I have it at 10degrees, but after it has run a while, it rattles heavily under light/meduim acceleration, at all times, whether it's going uphill or down. It has done that before, even before this last rebuild, I've always had to back the timing way off, like to 4degrees or something. Using autolight plugs, 8mm wires, Accel coil, Napa distributor/ignition box. Gas doesn't seem to affect it much, whether 87 or 93.
Oil pressure still holding, 90+ when cold, 30@idle/60@2k when hot.
This sounds exactly like what my Bronco was doing a couple of weeks ago. My timing was too advanced, it was at 10 degrees then i moved it to 6 degrees. Fixed the problem and starts right up. Good luck.
