I have a 1994 Ford F-150, 351w 5.8 efi. Wanting to put an aftermarket cam but don't know what style to do. Still learning about engines and would like some help! Thanks!
First question.. do you have emissions tests to pass?
That is important because the motor probably won't pass a sniffer test with just about any aftermarket cam in it.
The other thing is the stock cam in this vintage motor is actually pretty good and it really just needs a bit more lift and you can get that with 1.7 rockers.
But that said do you have other plans for the motor in the future like heads and intake? A MAF conversion?
Pick a cam company, make a phone call, will give you quick resolution. Your gonna be recommended a torque cam or the grind at the bottom of the list, no matter whom you call.
But it's gonna cost more than you think, and will not unlock any massive amount of horsepower or torque. The bottle neck, is the junk cylinder heads and intake.
I'd spend some time learning more about the 351w and look at the bigger picture, like how to make real hp/tq, to keep up with, if not exceed modern drivetrains, save a big pile of cash and do it right all at once.
I was planning on doing cam as big as possible that will work with stock heads and intake. Good lopey sound and added hp. Wasn't sure if i could use roller rockers? Other than that I am not sure what I need.
I mean as big as possible that will work with stock EFI
It can be done and it "run" But it will not pass a sniffer test and will suffer in drivablity. A loopy cam screws with the vacuum reading that the map needs for the fuel tables to run the engine, that is why it From random stalls to having to pedal it to get it going and even not starting plus the bad emissions that many advise against it. Follow Conanski and his advice, he won't lead you in the wrong direction.
So what do you recommend that I do? The place I take my truck for inspection (a friend) always passes it with illegal exhaust and minor things but not sure if they will pass when it comes to this. I was just looking for something to give me more hp/tq and a better sound. Didn't wanna spend too much money because still gotta do SAS and gears. Has an intake manifold leak and a waterpump leak so have to take the top of the motor off anyways.
Just an FYI, I spent a half an hour this week on hold just to ask Comp Cams about this particular cam number & was told it would NOT run on a speed density 5.8 system.
I was oe maf 5.0L. Cam is really not too harsh compared to the oe cam. Dont see how it would cause issues with SD. Never had it. Both my trucks are MAF.
It pulls. But i was on 1.7. Barely heard a lope. But thay some bitch moved wasnt bad for fairly stock truck.
Oh no doubt it will run on MAF. Tech was very specific about that. The over lap does not create enough vacuum for the SD & its MAP sensor to operate correctly.
But me & the OP have 5.8 SD, which is what he asked about.
(On Edit & to the OP)
I ordered a 35-512-8 today to go with my rebuild. I'll let you know how that works out in a month or so.

Just curious have you gotten your truck back together since you installed the 35-512-8 cam. If so did you have lifter noise after the replacement?
No, everything is still apart. There was issues with my machine shop & I had to have some work redone elsewhere & a $%#& silicon washer laid my compressor low for a week when I needed it most... Then there's funding which took a hit.
Don't expect lifter noise as I have a new replacement set Trick Flow OE style lifters to go with a fresh Melling std volume pump. New springs & etc. should keep all quiet.
The cam card for 35-349-8 states obd1 85+ compatible. Looking at the cam specs, I bet it'd work in a 351....maybe not so well in a 302 but I'd he curious to see myself.
