startout shudder

I just bought my 2015 F350 long bed Platinum a month ago, and the first trip with my 12,000 lb. 5th wheel had a vibration when starting out, but only from a stoplight with some acceleration or an incline, not at level slow startup. Anyone else experience this? There was a thread about this a few years ago, but I am wondering if anyone has experienced this lately?

I'm not sure what the vibration feels like but on my generation of dinosaur Super Duty a slight vibration (clunk-clunk-clunk) on takeoff means it is time to grease the slip yoke on the drive shaft.

The '15 F350 has a hill brake assist. Essentially, the truck keeps pressure on the brakes until the engine torque starts you moving. This causes a feeling like the brakes are grabbing for a moment when you start off, because they ARE grabbing for a moment. That's the point.
Is it possible this is what you're experiencing? It's a little strange until you get used to it. The goal is to keep the truck from rolling back (or forward, if you're facing down) while you transition from stopped to accelerating.
Excerpt, page 165, F-350 2015 Owner's Manual:
"The system makes it easier to pull away when your vehicle is on a slope without the need to use the parking brake.
When the system is active, your vehicle remains stationary on the slope for two to three seconds after you release the brake pedal. This allows time to move your foot from the brake to the accelerator pedal. The system releases the brakes automatically once the engine has developed sufficient drive to prevent your vehicle from rolling down the slope. This is an advantage when pulling away on a slope, for example from a car park ramp, traffic lights or when reversing uphill into a parking space."

don't think it is the hill brake assist...

because the shudder continues while I accelerate for several feet or seconds until I get going. this has only happened while pulling the 5th wheel, and only from a start up an incline, not on level ground.

Easy answer to this....................You need airbags!

Its driveline angle related when the rear of the truck says under a load. Mine did it worse going uphill. Getting the truck back closer to standard ride height will cure the issue. Ford will shim the rear axle for you, so it will be smooth under load, but you'll likely get the vibration under no load then.

Airbags are the easiest solution with no negative effects, other than a lighter wallet.

I had the same shudder when my truck was new. A retired light truck engineer told me it was most likely due to machining marks left on the drive shaft spline. He suggested driving it a while to see if it disappears. It did, no intervention needed.

Steve1230,

Thanks for asking this question because mine did the same thing on my last trip a couple of times.
